I had been impressed with the rock solid animation they had done with some still photo / matte painting type 3D effects, so I approached them for work on a time lapse sequence. Time lapse sequences can have motion introduced through basic motion control heads (moco rigs). However, some motion is either impractical (a crane in the middle of Tokyo) or impossible. In addition, when a moco head is used, the camera movement cannot be changed after it's shot - the movement is an integral part of the footage. That's where CGI work comes in. I shot footage from an angle that could accomodate some dramatic motion (like the crane movement), then the CGI team at WeArePitchBlack mapped the 3D geometry of the scene so we could animate that camera movement. This is a sample, although now that the geometry is mapped, we have pretty much full control of the camera movement within the scene. This would've taken a team of animators and a render farm not that long ago. Instead, we had one director / operator, two CG artists and some innovative programs like Maxon Cinema4D. From my first trip to Japan, I felt that stills never quite captured the frenetic energy of Tokyo, so I started looking for a way to capture what I felt when traveling in Asia. Small computer controllers and high resolution DSLRs allowed me to capture 4k+ time lapse sequences with minimal equipment.
